Holiday Light Displays

Gazing at local lights has become a holiday tradition for many people and in Minnesota it’s no different.

Bentleyville and Glensheen Mansion—two neighborhoods in the Duluth area—both boast amazing displays of holiday lights which bring people in from all around the region to see the light displays glowing in the fresh layers of snow.

Skiing, Snowboarding, Tubing, and More Winter Sports and Activities

While the North Shore doesn't have the kind of skiing you'll find out west, the Mont du Lac Resort is just 15 minutes from downtown Duluth and it offers tubing, skiing, and snowboarding, with lessons for beginners to advanced, activities for children, and winter ski camps.

In addition, Spirit Mountain has 22km of Nordic skiing, tubing, women's and children's programs and an amazing terrain park.

Cross-Country Skiing

With miles upon miles of cross-country trails, the Duluth area is a great place to engage in this fun winter sport (which helps you burn off those holiday pounds). There are packed, tracked, and groomed trails in the city itself as well as all over the North Shore—including trails suited to beginners as well as advanced skiers.

Snow Biking

The snow biking trend is growing. Spirit Mountain has a lift-access bike ski area, but snow biking tours are available throughout the area if you and your family want to take in the scenic winter views.

Trail systems in the north carefully segregate snowmobiles from skiers. Check out Duluth's Cross Town Trail or head north along the North Shore State Trail, which takes you 146 miles north to the wonderful little town of Grand Marais.

The Hermantown Night Riders maintain 59 further miles of trail in the Duluth area (and they're always looking for volunteers to help with trail maintenance).

Ice Fishing

A favorite pastime during the winter months in cold-weather states like Minnesota, ice fishing lets you enjoy the lake even when it’s completely frozen over. Grab a tent, your fishing pole, and spend a day on the ice.

Arts and Culture

If all of this outdoor fun is teaching you just how cold Duluth is, then you can easily move indoors. Duluth is the cultural center for a wide area of Minnesota, home to a playhouse, a symphony orchestra (in fact, the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra is the largest arts organization north of the Twin Cities), art museums, and more.

Check out the Lake Superior Art Glass gallery for glass artwork as well as classes and live demos, or the Renegade Theater Company. And, of course, Duluth has a wide selection of restaurants to check out.

Duluth is not just a summer town; it's a winter playground too. Residents get to play in the snow, enjoy spectacular views of the winter lake, and enjoy all of the culture this city has to offer.
