5 Things to Consider When Buying a Cabin near Pequot Lakes

Pequot Lakes is an attractive choice for a cabin or second home in Minnesota. The city of just over 2,000 residents lies in Crow Wing County, an easy 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Minneapolis and St. Paul and nestled into the scenic lakes and hills of Minnesota.

Purchasing a cabin or any real estate always requires some research and planning. Here are five things to consider before buying a cabin near Pequot Lakes.

1. There's No Shortage of Amenities in Pequot Lakes

For being a small town, Pequot Lakes has more amenities than you might expect. The city boasts over a dozen places to eat, but you won't find many chain restaurants in the area. Most of the eateries here are small and family-owned.

When it comes to medical facilities, the area is well served. There is a clinic right in Pequot Lakes. The closest emergency department and hospital are in Brainerd, which is 20 miles to the south.

Pets are like family, and there's a good chance your cat or dog will come with you to your cabin. If you ever need medical care for your pet, you won't have to go far. A veterinarian right in town, Pequot Lakes Animal Hospital, provides medical care to all four-legged cabin dwellers.

2. You Can Mingle with the Locals or Just Relax on Nearby Trails

Some seasonal residents want to mingle with the locals and others just want some quiet time to themselves. A cabin near Pequot Lakes makes both possible.

The Pequot Lakes American Legion is open seven days a week, giving seasonal residents a chance to know their neighbors. Go ahead and dive right into the local culture with the Legion's weekly bingo and meat raffles.

Anyone who wants some quiet time can head out to the Paul Bunyan Trail. The 120-mile trail is open all year for biking, hiking, and snowmobiling.

3. Pequot Lakes is in the center of lake country

Minnesota is known as "The Land of 10,000 Lakes" and Crow Wing County has its fair share of water. There are countless lakes between Pequot Lakes and Brainerd. Wherever you are in the county, you're never far from water.

In the summer, that means plenty of swimming, fishing, and ice skiing. You'll never run out of places to go pontooning or canoeing. In the winter, those hearty enough to brave the cold will enjoy ice fishing.

4. Weather: It's a Matter of Perspective

If you're looking at cabins in northern Minnesota, you're not expecting a tropical climate. However, if you're not from the area, you might not realize just how cold it gets. From November through April, the average lows are below freezing. For ice fishers and snowmobile enthusiasts, the cold weather is a big plus. This means most lakes freeze over and stay frozen all winter long.

The summers in Pequot Lakes are also cooler, with average highs in the 70s and 80s. If you like milder summers, Crow Wing County is a great place to be in July and August.

5. Land for Sale in Pequot Lakes

In and around Pequot Lakes, there are plenty of turnkey cabin properties for sale. You'll find that most houses are cheaper here than in the Twin Cities metro. You'll likely get more square footage and acreage for your money in Pequot Lakes.

But for some people, their lifelong dream is to build a customized cabin. In some parts of Minnesota, finding vacant lots is next to impossible. Wooded lots are currently abundant in Pequot Lakes and nearby Nisswa. This is a great area for both cabin owners and investors to check out.
